I was wondering somthing. when a person has MRSA in their Nares and such are they contagious? if you get MRSA / C.DIFF typre things do you have them forever? I am sooooo confused.
I work in LTC we get people that have MRSA, when the ambulance drops them off they have the whole bio hazard suit thing goin on but it is just fine for us CNA's to care for them with basic universal precautions (gloves) what in the He#k?
I thought MRSA, ORSA, and VRE all needed gowns/gloves and mask also for ORSA. Am I wrong?
I had a pt first semesterw/ ORSA in his trach and it was gown/glove/face shield...on and off...all day long. Yet the nurses and aides came in just with gloves. I didin't get it and the nurse said healthcare workers end up colonized with all sorts of stuff anyway.
Someone asked if hospital workers are suspectible to contracting MRSA from patients. I am very curious about this. Last week I took care of a pt (I'm an aide) who was in for a cardiac condition period. When I came back yesterday (5 days later) this pt was on contact precautions because she was positive for MRSA. I'm nervous now, especially because I'm pregnant. Realistically, should I be concerned?

This is why we use standard precautions. You will be fine as long as you wear gloves, wash hands etc...The type of precautions that is maintained depends on where the infection is located. For example contact precautions are used if the site is in a wound. So, always ask what type of precautions and where is the site is when you get report prior to your shift beginning. That way you will know what type of barriers to use.
If the patient is just staying in their room, it is not an issue, and you also have circulating air in the rooms. In the ambulance, it is essentially a closed system, the medics are only protecting themselves.............you would do the same thing also. You usually have the paitents clustered that have MRSA in your unit. The ambulance is going to be picking up many other patients almost continuously, and some of them can be immuno-compromised.
C-diff goes away, once you get a negative screen for it, then the extra precautions are discontinued. MRSA likes to hang around..............
Hi!
When working with cloridium difficille, eveverything must be saniteited (? wright word, sorry I'm from europe) and you must have 3 faeces tests , not diarrea, to prove its ok. Then you must desinfect EVERYTHING THAT THE PT HAS BEEN USED OR BEEN IN TOUCH WITH.
MRSA ; OF COURSE YOU CAN DESINFECT AND GIVE IN LAST CASE VANCOMYCIN OR ALSO ONE AB THAT YOU SAVE TO THE HARDEST CASES. OUR INFECTION MEDICAL DOC WICH IS WORKING WITH MRSA, TOLD US THAT OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO DESINFECT.
BUT: YOU MUST ALLWAYS ASSESS WHERE THE MRSA IS ON THE BODY. ALLWAYS COVER WOUNDS, ITS WORSE IF ITS IN THE LUNGS AND THE PAT. HAS TO BEEN MOVED FOR OPERATING OR X-RAY. THEN THE PT SHOULD USE THE MASK WHEN TRANSPORTED. TRY TO MAKE TEST IN THE END OF THE DAY.
THE SAME DESINFECTION PROCEDURES WITH THINGS AND THE ROOM AS cLOSRTIDIUM. UNTIL HE IS FREE FROM MRSA.
3 DIFFERENT TESTS FROM THE NOSE CAVITUM, PERITONEUM AND LOOK AFTER SCRATHCES OR SKIN DAMAGE. EVERY 3 TESTS MUST BE NEGATIV UNTIL TH PT IS DECLEARED CLEAN.
Of course, you may have pt that dont survive. My aunt with diabetes and skinproblems died of MRSA. BUT YOU CAN MAKE PEOPLE HEALTHY AGAIN, AND FOLLOW INFECTION PROCEEDUES!!! COOPERATE WITH HEALTH ATORITY!!!
THE LAST AND VERY SCARY AND DIFFICULT PROBLEM ARE MULTIRESISTENT TUBERCULOSIS. YOU CANT USE A REGULAR MASK, BUT A SO CALLED (IN EUROPE) 3M WITH FILTER. WHEN TRANSPORTING THE PT HE HAS TO USE A MASK, BUT ITS VERY HARD FOR TBC PT TO USE MASK,SINCE THEY HAVE SO MUCH COUFHING AND SPUTUM.
THIS IS THE CLEAR PROCEEDURES IN EUROPE. ITS A GLOBAL PROBLEM BECAUSE WHE ARE TRAVELLING SO MUCH. THERE ARE OTHER REASENS TOO.
FROM ME,
Danianne
