I worked an agency shift last night on a NICU. My babies were growers but still NG fed. They had an RN on the unit who introduced herself as the delopemental specialist. She said she would be doing the assessments and feedings for my babies every other feed. My first thought was well what am I doing here then. This was the first time I've heard of this. I was uncomfortable with it but didn't complain. If the babies benefit bring it on. I did my own assessments of course. As the night wore on though she was really stepping on my toes a lot. I thought maybe she was just going a little further with it because she knows the babies and I'm more of a PICU nurse on top of being agency but she was doing the same for several groups of babies. What is your take on this as NICU nurses? Aren't you all developmental specialists? You know how to assess the feeding development of a grower. What are they doing with their mouths? Are there hunger cues? How alert are they? Are they sleeping between feeds? etc. Is sharing your assignment load with these nurses the norm? If so is there some type of etiquette? I never refuse good help but I feel pretty strongly that in critical care you just don't go fussing with someone else's patient. I know I'm not alone there.
