whats per diem?

per diem means no benefits (no medical, dental, vision, etc) but....its a lot more $$ per hour.

when i was a CNA per diem (this may not be true at your hospital) but i was able to write my own schedule and basically work whenever i wanted to

Where I work it is a non benefitted position that pays 25% more. I am the first cancelled unless someone wants to take a low census day. I am required to work 4 shifts in 4 weeks, two days have to be weekend days. If I am scheduled to work but cancelled due to low census it still counts. I also get 2 (4week) periods a month where I do not have to meet the work requirement.

I was a regular part time employee til last year and love the flexibility per diem status gives me. I didn't feel comfortable doing this til I knew we could afford it if I got cancelled occasionally. Believe me I get called 2-3 times a week to come in extra, but I don't. That is whole other topic that all nurses seem to face. I get medical/dental/vision through my husband's work.

I work as a CNA per diem. Where I work, it just means that I pick up 3 shifts every schedule... So me, I work a M-F 40 hour job as a medical assistant. But on the weekends I pick up at the per diem job... Check with your job, but if I work anything over the 3 days I am supposed to work, it counts as a bonus day. Which is like time and a half.. I usually get paid like $10.50 an hour, so when I do bonus days, its like $15 an hour.. Hope I helped...

they are not called per diem here - rather they are casual shifts. ie no comittments long term from either employer or employee. Employee gets the benefit of extra $$ per hour - employer gets benefit of having flexibility to say - don't need you today thanx.
