What's in your nursing portfolio

I was told by a great nurse when I was a student nurse and tech to make a nursing portfolio. I made one for when I applied to my new grad RN positions but I feel it needs to be representative of all the things I've accomplished then and now, as well as my goals.

What do you have in your portfolio?

What does your portfolio look like?

Is there a template you used?

I feel like I can go from simple plastic cover all the way to scrapbook level with what I include and how it looks so I'm looking for some direction to keep it clean and professional but still showcase me.

I do not have a portfolio per say but I do have a binder with protective sheets where I keep copies of certifications, even some recommendations, some policies and procedures (I work a couple of jobs ). It helps to keep me organized more than anything. I have never had to show a portfolio for a job, a resume has sufficed. But I do think it is a terrific idea to keep track personally of your accomplishments etc. so you have easy reference.

I was told in school and by my nurse friend that it was like any professional portfolio where it highlights you career-wise. When I did my new grad interviews, I brought one along and it had in it my resume, a copy of my BLS, my letters of recommendation, patient comment cards about me, and a list of where I did each clinical rotation. I've read about nurses keeping up with it through their entire career. It's like a continuing thing so if you ever need to showcase what you've done either for an interview or just to have, you have it in one place.

Personally speaking, I've found nursing portfolios to be quite useful in nailing a job interview, at least as a new grad. I have had 2 interviews in my nursing career and have gotten offers from both, and I feel my portfolio not only showcased my accomplishments, but also showed some attention to detail and organization. There are all types, but I find a binder is best along with slip covers and dividers. You can showcase degrees, certifications, your license, memberships, CEUs (great thing to show off if they pertain to the position), rec letters, and maybe even a care plan or 2 if you are a new grad. Some people would argue it is overkill but I've always gotten positive feedback about it.
