What's the best way to get a nursing degree in Tampa?

Published

I need your advice, please! I have read through many threads here and see conflicting ideas about a good way to get a nursing degree. I see some people go the route of taking pre-reqs at HCC and then applying for the nursing program. But it seems that taking those pre-reqs is no guarantee someone will get into the program? I also have seen others suggest going through an LPN program and then going the bridge program through HCC. What is the advantage to that? Would you suggest one way over the other and why? What are the advantages of going either route?

Currently I am a SAHM but my youngest will be in pre-school next Fall which will open up my schedule enough to dedicate finally getting back to school. I just need a little direction and advice since I don't know where to start! I appreciate anything you can offer.

I am sort of in your boat, but chose to go the LPN route. But there is no "right" answer to your question. In the Tampa area the choices for RN programs are a bit limited. There is HCC which you know requires pre-requisites. There is also the BSN programs for University of South Florida, South University, and University of Tampa. I also believe Everest University also has an RN (ASN) program as well. Now as for as "quick" Everest may be the fastest program to enter, BUT it is VERY expensive as this is a private program, the same goes for South University. USF is very competetive but a great program.

To me the Community College route offered the best value. It offered a 2 year program after pre-reqs and is a solid program. So why didnt I choose it. Basically because of timing. I have a degree from USF, but still require much of the pre-reqs (mainly sciences). With HCC you have to be completely done with pre-reqs prior to applying (which is fine) but that would push a "possible" entry date into their program way into 2010 (if I even get in). So, I decided to go to LPN school in St Pete (Erwin in Tampa has a wait list into 2009-2010). This way I can at least be on my way and still have a projected entry date in nursing school in 2010, but be a little ahead. I am taking science courses online through Community College (1 at a time). This is a bit more expensive to do it this way, but I really just would have hated doing all my pre-reqs then NOT get into school. That would frustrate me. LPN's can get a spot, as long as pre-reqs are complete. Again it just depends on what is best for you. I have friends who did it the traditional way (pre-reqs then apply) and they were fine. One of my friends had average grades and was waitlisted at HCC but then got in. Either way I am sure you will make the right choice.

Hope this helps.

I am very interested in this as well and would love more info.

There has been a lot of discussion on nursing schools in the Tampa area. Keep searching the threads.

However, be aware that there are very few jobs for all the graduating new RNs and LPNs in Tampa Bay.

I'm an fairly new LPN and was going through the transition program to RN at SPC. I gave up on that idea due to the job market and have decided to leave the area to greener pastures in Canada.

I'm seriously considering nursing school for RN in Tampa Bay area...can someone please advise as to the current employment conditions for new grads here? I am really concerned that I will go through all of this effort and expense and then not be able to get a job? Relocating is not an option for my family. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
