What's the best math to take to refresh for math in TEAS?

Published

Hey, everyone.

Long story short, I already have a Bachelor's in English, and graduated from college way back in 2006, but am now going back for my RN (though I am thinking long and hard about BSN). Since then I haven't needed math...well, for almost anything (especially with an English degree, you wouldn't really need to and, unfortunately, I'm not very good at math either). One of the things that scares me the most about the TEAS is the math. So I was wondering what math would be the best to get me ready for the math on the TEAS. Like a low level math class that goes over everything, or an intermediate algebra class? Or statistics?

Thanks so much!

I don't know about a class, but I bought Davis's Basic Math Review for Nurses. This is great for working through the basics and then working through the TEAVs study guide.

Do you have the College Alg. or Higher completed with your prior bachelors?

I wouldnt take any math courses to prepare for the teas! It is basic math that you should know most of if you took any of those courses before...NOW...I understand you need to refresh yourself but the ATI book has GREAT review and refresher. It will also teach you things you might not remember learning. I used McGraw hill and ATI and it was MORE then enough. McGraw hill was actually a bit more then the TEAS.

There where a lot of real life situations questions...here is one from my practice book...not a question but just off the top of my head...jerry wants to buy cat shampoo with flea spray which is the best deal if money isnt an issue? Mary has this much money in her account and gets a check for xyz and spends xyz how much is left?

With my Bachelor's, I actually only took a basic math...like the lowest one. Since I was an English major, I only needed one math class and I hate(d) math so I went with the lowest one possible. Now I wish I hadn't done that, but it's too late now. I have a bunch of TEAS test books, including the math for nurses review.

I just felt like taking an actual math class would prepare me more than just going through a book.

I kind of felt like the math didnt require a whole bunch of high math...I could be wrong but it was my view. It was basic alg. like 2x +6=30 or 9(2+4)+ 12(1/2x)=101+48/6

If you havent taken something like intermediate alg. I gess that would be a good class but I think the review in those books would be a good start. If you really feel you cant do any of them...then you go and take the class.

Good day:

Khan Academy has a lot of good math tutorials from basic to advanced.

Thank you.

The Teas study guide is only 60 bucks and covers everything, way better than a class

I am currently in Algebra I because I didn't do so well on the math portion of the Accuplacer test. In looking through the study guide for the Teas those concepts are what I am seeing in there. I have to have college algebra done before I can get in the program so I will be doing that next summer.

I say get the official Teas study guide. Its a great help and way cheaper than taking a whole class as a refresher.

Good luck :)

I have been using the ATI manual and Mcgraw Hill - from what I can see, the most difficult math is just very basic algebra. Know the FOIL method and order of operations (remember PEDMAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction). Khan Academy has a great section on this. Also, I found the basic math and pre-algebra workbook for Dummies useful. Once you get into practicing the math, you'll see that it's not as difficult as it might seem right now!

Definitely use the ATI manual and Khan Academy. I also went to my public library and they had a good stash of nursing entrance exams study books that I used to look at extra practice questions.
