My first post here is a question about working while taking prerequisites!
I work full-time, and it's not really an option not to. I have worked hard building up my units to be able to even have a chance during registration to get science classes, and this fall will be the first time I get them. The school where I will be taking pre-req's has Anatomy and Physiology at decent evening times, but the Chemistry and Micro classes both start at 5 pm, which I really don't understand. They used to have later options in the past, but the past year, and now next year, they are early.
Now I'm kind of at a loss. I have looked around at other colleges to see about these classes, and the latest they start elsewhere is only 5:30, which doesn't really help me, since I would have to drive farther to get there and wouldn't stand a chance of getting them during registration anyway.
I guess what I'm wondering, is if it is really worth it to take a part-time job and take out loans when I am just in the prerequisite stage? Are there any other people who have encountered this problem? What have you done to get around it?
Thanks!
I took a big risk when I did it. I had to take 2 semesters of pre-requisites before I could even apply to the program I wanted to get into. So I worked lots of overtime (60-70 hours per week for 2+ years) and lived very frugally so that I could save as much money as possible. Then I quit my job right before the Fall semester started. It was a huge risk, but for me it paid off because I kept my GPA high and I was accepted into my program of choice at my school of choice. To me it was a risk worth taking.
Just in case, I made sure I didn't burn any bridges so that if I didn't get into the program I could always return to my previous job. I was very vague when I left and never really said I was switching to nursing. I said I was entering a very vigorous university program and couldn't work and go to school at the same time. He assumed I was getting an MBA and I didn't correct him.
This past semester my AP class was from 6-9.....I work 12 hour days and midnights.....On my day work my supervisor let me take my lunch at the end of the day. So I left work at 5 and was able to get to class on time. On midnights my supervisor let me come in at 930, I had to use my annual leave though. Talk to your supervisor maybe she or he will be willing to work with you. I have a mean supervisor with a soft spot in her heart for young people going to school....And she loves to hear about my classes :) Good luck!

It looks like I will be able to take Chemistry at the CC down the street from my work. I'm amazed that the class has not filled up yet.
