Ward clerk duties can vary from facility to facility. One facility I worked at, we would say that unofficially that the ward clerk ran the unit, simply because of all the things that got taken care of by them that kept the unit running smoothly. They arranged and ordered tests and procedures. Entered in labs and orders. Put the chart together and ensured that it was kept up (if more forms were needed they checked for that). Fielded the phone calls. As to the lab labelling, it actually is safer and more accurate for the person who drew the labs to label them at the bedside, after checking the labels with the patient's arm band.

Just wondering because I work as a clerk/secretary in the ER and we don't do much but I was wondering what other places have their secretary's do. We page on call services for the docs and nurses, order diet trays, put in lab and radiology orders. We aren't allowed to label the lab specimens, this was a recent unwelcomed changed by all the nurses because it can be time consuming.
