I worked 5 years as a Paramedic, about a decade ago. These days I work at a university library and we are planning to launch a BSN program this fall (awaiting approval by some board). That said, I will have a few months time to kill if I am able to enroll in nursing classes this fall. I would like to obtain an RN.
I'd like to get ahead on some reading, either text books that I will see in future classes, or other books you may think very helpful in preparation for school.
Maybe Anatomy and Physiology? What would you all recommend I start with to begin preparing?
Thanks!

hi Jamie, I am a certified NYS paramedic also.
However, I never worked as a paramedic, have being a student all my life.
is your RN program a bridge program for paramedics or just regular BSN nursing?
I want to know if its possible for me to get some information from you about where to apply, because right now, my chance of getting in the nursing program there is veryvery slim. thanks
Hey, what I am doing is waiting for a Texas nursing board to give the university I attend the green light to launch a BSN program this fall. If we get the go ahead, I will apply for that program.
I've only begun to research nursing and studies, so I don't have much more information. As I learn more I will definitely post it.

You might want to get the recent Nursing review text, it has outline
reviews for each area for the sciences and nursing. In addition, questions in
each area so you can see an overview of what is covered in a nursing
program. I am out of school for quite a while, but Mosby, Saunders,
Lippincott all have review books. You can compare them at Barnes and
Noble or Borders.
Good luck! I hope the Board will approve the program so you can get started!
jahra,
Many thanks. I work in the campus library as well, so I will do a book search on what you suggested. Also, we are getting nursing texts in regularly now in anticipation of the program. I am snagging them to read as they come. :-)

I did a Google search. Are you referring to something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Mosbys-Comprehensive-Nursing-NCLEX-RN%C3%82%C2%AE-Examination/dp/0323053041/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301671687&sr=1-1
(I did find a copy of this in our library...1973) LOL
Jahra,
Thanks again. I just asked our library to order the current Mosby's review. Now I will have it as well as others who want to study nursing here.
You all are helping to start our nursing program. We are now one book farther along here at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Pick up a copy of the NCLEX review, the Saunders one is the one I like to use, very straight to the point and understanding. The Kama Sutra comes in handy as well, pick up a copy to review the skills you've learned.

Hi Jamie,
I am curious if you are still employed by TAMU? Also, did you apply for the nursing program starting in Jan of 2013?
Thanks,
Melody
