I'm interested in becoming nurse, however i'm not sure which route to take. I will be graduating from high school next month, and will be attending SF State in the fall. There is a nursing program at SF State, however it heard that it is extremely competitive, which is intimidating! I'm pretty confused and don't know if i should attend sf state and attempt to go for the nursing program, or start with community college?

If SF State has some sort of priority list or a first time status list, then stay there. Some schools will rank you for admission based on if you entered there as a pre-nursing freshman and/or if you've taken all of your pre-reqs/gen-eds at that particular school. Just work hard to earn a high, well-deserved GPA, do everything you can to find any sort of medical experience, and apply to different schools. You're starting with a clean slate for college so you might as well prove yourself to nursing admissions that you've been well-deserving of a spot all along :)

I'm with mplovex on this one, you have a clean slate so just follow the recommended track for freshmen wanting to go into nursing and make sure you do the best you can in your pre-reqs as possible. Also, look into the other criteria for the program such as volunteering at a local hospital, 2nd language requirements etc. to increase your chances of getting in. Since programs are very competitive, I would also recommend applying to other schools just in case. Another way to help you get some classes out of the way would be to perhaps take a class or two during the summer at the community college level (since it is cheaper than csu tuition) or maybe even a winter session to help lighten your course load during the regular year. Do well in your classes the first time around so you can make yourself as competitive an applicant as possible! Good luck!

most programs in cali are impacted, at least think that is where you are talking about. I would consider apply to out of state nursing programs when you have your prereqs done to increase your chance of getting in...

There are also LVN/LPN and RN programs at community colleges (the 4 year state schools also give you a RN title for job placement) and then you are able to go LVN > RN and RN > BSN (the 4 year degree) and BSN > MSN (graduate school degree)
not sure about there, but where i went to school, the community college and the state university worked very closely (practically a single entity) and the pre-requisites were the same, many students applied for both programs, or a few of my friends at the community college applied and were accepted for the BSN at the state. Which ever path you decide, best of luck, and I'm sure there are other paths to getting to becoming a nurse
