What would you do?

Published

So I'm wondering what you all would do in this situation.

I've been an NE for a little over a month now, and no one on the floor seems to like me. I am a quiet person, but I'm not lazy which is what some of the nurses seem to think. I was called into my supervisors office, and what she told me kind of threw me for a loop.

She said that she had a lot of negative complaints about so far, that all I did was sit around, and that I didn't offer the CNAs enough help. The biggest complaint was that I didn't appear excited to be there. :/ The problem is that I feel like I do a ton of work. So far, I've helped the CNAs whenever possible, I also do accuchecks, change linens, clean pts, turn pts, answer call lights whenever possible, and chart on 4-5 patients each shift. Sometimes it takes me about 30 minutes to 1 hour to get to the accuchecks and everything else, because I have to assess my pts and do opening notes.

I ask the CNAs if they need help all the time and they usu say no. They also won't come to me for help(turning, bathing, etc)

What the h*** am I supposed to do? My supervisor pretty much told me that I wasn't going to get hired after this externship is over.

I just want to do a good job. Any suggestions on what you would do to improve performance? It seems like they just don't like me. I do admit to being extremely quiet though, and people seem to hate that.

Wow. That is just too awful. I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. I would really tell your supervisor exactly what it is you do accomplish. Tell her what you feel, otherwise only the bad will be in her mind. I don't know how much you are enjoying it there but if it were me, I would stick around only as long as I had to.

Good luck and I hope it get better! :heartbeat

Sorry you are having such a hard time. I too am quite and sometimes that comes off as snob like. I would try to put myself out there and be a little more out going. I know this may not be the place for you, but go into the next one with a positive upbeat attitude.

That's just horrible. I hate to hear that. I am going to go with what the PP said and explain or show your supervisor what it is you do get done on your shifts.

I know how it feels to be the quiet person. It truly does make you feel awkward, and it seems to paint a false picture of who you are. We can't get around that aspect, and honestly - it shouldn't be about that. I also fear this when I get employed into a healthcare-setting environment...I'm very quiet. While I don't see patients having that big of an issue with it, co-workers take it the wrong way, and it seems that is what their problem may be. I wish you the best of luck. In time, maybe your supervisor will see and take note of everything you do while you're there, and change her opinion, based on complaints. :)

I've learned that a lot of times, people pull complaints out of their ass just to see someone get kicked or just to make themselves feel worthy. Keep your head up. If your supervisor is thinking that way, maybe God has a better plan for you in the future.

Best of luck to you! :redpinkhe
