What would you do?

I am having difficulty making a decision and thought you all might be able to help! I am 10 wks pregnant with my 1st. My husband is going on deployment soon and so I am going elsewhere for the pregnancy and birth. I have to have an electice C-section due to previous pelvic trauma. My options are going to a medium sized community hospital, with no neonatal ICU and limited pediatrics and 45 minutes from the nearest neonatal unit but in the area I would much rather be OR a magnet hospital in the top 100, which has neonatal services and much more extensive peds. They also do over twice as many surgical procedures a year and have an excellent reputation. However, if I go to the latter I will be much less independent and in a rural area. I am a citychick by heart and can see myself being bored rigid in 2 days!

Now,as a nurse I know all too well that things can and do go wrong and so I am torn!

So, what do you think and what would you do?????? Opinions please!

I would go the hospital that can handle it ALL and they do it often

As a wife of a former army officer, 14 years, I had both of my kids alone. He was in Kuwait in 91 with my first and in another country I cannot mention in 93. It is something as military wives we know can and does happen very often. If I were you, and I have been in your position, I would go with the more experienced hospital, for my child's and my own safety and so my husband would have less to worry about when he needs to be thinking about other things for his safety. Knowing we are in good hands when they are away takes a lot of pressure off their shoulders. They feel bad enough being away, especially during a pregnancy, so anything to help them feel better is great.

Congrats on your baby.....may the winds of home bring him safely back to your heart.....

Does your pelivic injury place you at risk for problems carrying the baby or just with delivery? What advice does your current OB have?

If you are not at risk for preterm labor or other problems, I'd choose the area where I wanted to live. If you're bored stiff, you'll be alone and unhappy. In the more urban area you'll be alone, but active, interested, and involved in things outside of your aloneness. Community hospitals can do Cesarean Sections very well. They may not be able to "crash" someone as quickly as a larger place, but it doesn't sound like you are at risk for needing that type of care.

Firstly say thank you to your Husband from both myself and hubby.

I would go with what offers you the best care for both you and your baby. No questions asked.

Just delivery, as far as I know but this is my first. I am currently seeing a NP-midwife who has said for me to discuss delivery options with my new OB, who I haven't got yet because I need to make this decision!! Catch-22!

Thanks all for your advice and I will pass the thanks on to my husband. He will appreciate it.

I would go where there is at LEAST a level II nursery. Even with a planned c/s things can go wrong, I have seen it too many times. From a personal point of view, my sister had a term baby (second baby) with a very normal delivery (complete normal preg, no DM, PIH or any risk factors) and her 8lb6oz baby ended up in NICU for a week. You never know until they are here. Congrats and good luck.
