What study guide to use for the NLN PAX RN?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, I am taking the NLN PAX RN soon and I am super nervous. I am trying to figure what is the best guide to use to study. I currently have the McGraw-Hill nursing entrance exam book, but wanted to know if there were other study guides that could be better for this particular exam. Also I wanted to know how long everyone usually spends studying for the exam.

Thanks!!

Hi. NLN has a Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam which is published by Jones & Bartlett. I got mine at Barnes & Noble. I am scheduled to take the PAX-RN on 1/22, and I am studying daily. The material in the guide is straightforward, and it is a review of what you have already learned if you have taken courses in Biology, A & P, Chem and Physics. The math ranges from basic to introductory algebra, and the review in the book is a good refresher. There is little review on vocabulary, and the book just advises that you read and build vocabulary as much as possible.

I am slowly feeling more confident about the exam because I'm studying. I suggest that you get the book and get started studying ASAP.

Good luck!

Hi,

I took the test on Dec. 4th. Definitely good advice to study the NLN guide. Here are a few tips that are not in the guide. There are several questions on the test that are developmental, they do not count toward your grade. If a math or science question seems totally perplexing and you can't find the answer chances are it is one of these questions so don't spend a ton of time on it, make an educated guess. Teach yourself how to convert Kelvin to Celcius etc., and how to configure resistance in a parallel or series circuit. There are quite a few questions about electricity on the test. This information can be found on the internet. Memorize the different gas laws, Boyle's law, Charles law etc. There aren't very many anatomy questions, my test had three different questions pertaining to the eye. Know how things are transported in and out of cells, active, passive, ion pumps etc. The rest of the questions in science are variations of the information found in the guides. For math working with percents is a must and you should be able to do long division quickly without a calculator. For example convert 17/23 to a decimal. The verbal portion is difficult to study for. There are words in the vocabulary section that you may never have heard of before, but chances are no one else has either. The test is difficult and frustrating but keep in mind that you are being graded by percentiles not by your raw score. I wish I could offer more specifics but the test is so stressful that afterward it is all a blur. Perhaps if you have a specific question I could help. Good luck!

JBowk gave some pretty sound advice! I agree with everything posted there.

I took the test on 12/8 and did pretty well. I bought every review book I could find a couple of months before. I would do some questions here and there, but really started buckling down 2 weeks before I took the exam, concentrating on science. I took all the practice tests from the book and reviewed the questions. If there was a question I got wrong, I went back to review that concept....

If I had to take it again, I would spend some time brush up on my simple math computing skills... If I had been able to answer the "easy" questions faster, I would have had more time for the challenging ones. It is stressful but you kinda just have to get yourself "in the zone" and get each question done as quickly and efficiently as possible!

GOOD LUCK! It won't be bad at all if you're prepared!

I took the test 1/22 (this past Saturday), and I scored in the 99th percentile in Verbal and Science and the 92nd for DI, the 88th for AD and the 87th for All in Math. The NLN Review book was awesome, and I highly recommend it for studying up for the test. I studied almost every day for 3 weeks, and it paid off.

Thank you to everyone! I am taking the exam in April and I just purchased the NLN PAX RN study guide.

do we have to use the calculator im taking my exam in 2 weeks im so nervous
