What states allow you to challenge the NCLEX-PN?

I am a student nurse & I've passed everything but my last class of the RN program (critical care). Because I failed this class by 2.5 points on my exam, I am unable to graduate & am being asked to take the LPN course & then re-enroll into the RN program after working as a full time LPN for 6 months. I feel that's far too long after I've already spent this long to get my RN! I would like to get my LPN ASAP. I can't find any solid information about it anywhere but I've heard that medics in the military & other RN students have challenged the NCLEX-PN to get their license. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you for your time!

I am also in the same situation. I failed RN school in my last semester because I did not pass the EXIT exam. With that being said, I have challenged BON of Florida but my application is pending because the school won't sign the Practical Nurse Equivalency (PNEQ) Application Letter, which is required to complete the application process. This is very frustrating and I do not understand why they won't sign a form. I've been going left and right without success. Also looking for recommendations! I live in Texas.

@Karla R if you don't mind answering was your education from RN school or lpn school

I had 2 weeks left and had to withdraw from lpn school last month but I passed all the classes required to challenge in Florida can I challenge as a lpn student or you have to be a RN student only

Hi there,

As long as you have completed med surge 1, fundamentals, pharm, and mental health, and you have passed with at least a C+, you are qualified to apply for the PNEQ.  I was in a RN program though, but I think that as long as you have a certain number of credits and have completed those classes, you're good to go.

Also, once you obtain your LPN license, it will only be to work in Florida - single- state license. You may apply for a compact license; however, you must reside in the state of Florida to be eligible.

I wish you good luck and please research your home state educational laws, because some states like NY won't allow endorsement.

Thank you for sharing your story. I had a similar situation. I Challenged the Florida Board of nursing and passed on the first try; but I wanted to know if any other states endorsed your license or did you move to Florida?

Hello there @splewis,

Unfortunately, I was not able to able to endorse my license in NY. I am currently attending an LPN program since moving to Florida or other state was not an option.

How was your process? Were you able to endorse your license? if so, where are you located.

I think you have to make sure your state accepts PNEQ, because it's acceptable in Florida but not approved in some states

What do you need to get to pass the exit exam? Maybe you should try to retake the exit?

I can't, they only allowed students to take the EXIT exam ONE time. If we fail, we're out of the program. They changed the policy six months prior to my graduation date. They used to have two chances and I never heard of someone not graduating before that. The school was going through a transition process and the new dean was very harsh on the students, and also changed the rules because they were on probation with BON. I'm still devasted. I've called many nursing programs and none of them take nursing credits from other schools.

Most schools give 2 HESI exit try, your school is been so unfair to the student, mine has 2 try and if failed the second time you can retake the last course but by doing that you will get only one try for the exit exam then you out of the program.

I tried to Dm you but don't know how

It's very unfair. They also denied my appeal to retake the class and withdrew me from the program. They stated that the criteria were based on GPA and other requirements and I did not qualify to retake the class. Plus, the program is on hold because they are on probation with the BON.

With not mentioning, they did not tell the students what kind of EXIT exam was going to be. HESI, ATI or Kaplan. They gave us the Kaplan exit exam which was very difficult.
