I would suggest holding off on a specialty decision for now and concentrating on learning all that you can as you journey through nursing school. You will get a fairly broad exposure to the different aspects in your clinical rotations and that will help you get a better focus on where you think you want to be after school. Make your destination graduation and passing the NCLEX.
And one of the cool things about nursing is you can always change your area of work.

Hello, everyone. I am newly registered but I have been on this site obsessively researching and reading for many months now.
Anywho, I am the type of person where I need to have a goal in mind - a destination so I can decide my path. Well I am starting nursing school in January (finally!!) and I want to begin thinking about a specialty that would click with me. I've considered psych, military, ER, plastic surgery, education.. I wanted to post a little background on myself and see in what specialty my desires lie.
I love talking to people. I am the resourcefull person in my family that everyone calls if they have a question. I get along with everyone (even the ones that no one else does) because I try to relate and be very nonjudgemental and respectful. When I think about nursing, I see myself educating my patients, sitting down with them and listening to them, their concerns and me informing them (that's why I thought psych/education). I also know that when chaos strikes, I am able to focus right in and be quick to respond (that's why I thought ER). I really want to be able to say that I saved someone's life, or I made a difference (there's where the military thought comes from).
I have thought about job shadowing but the hospital tells me I have to be IN the nursing program before I can enter certain departments.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!
