What does "provisional" status mean?

Published

I am looking at Gulf Coast College for LPN school, but on the Board of Nursing Web site their status is listed as provisional. Is that a red flag? Would I still be able to test when I graduated?

Hey there! I dont know why so many people in the Florida forums view the posts and dont reply, but, provisional status simply means the school has applied for licensure in the State of Florida. Before being awarded full licensure, they must go through an evaluation process, hence the "provisonal" status. I am attending a school that also has a provisonal status. They must first submit their plan to even be awarded that, so chances are you are safe. Realistically, any school can loose their license, and jsut because they are at provisional status does not mean you should not attend. All schools must go through the same process. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck!

Thank you for answering! I was starting to get my feelings hurt. (Sniff.) No, really, I appreciate the post. My big fear would be attending a school and having it close half-way through! And still owing all the money. That would be awful.

Just a side note, many of the state colleges have "provisional status" on some of their programs. It just means that they have a process to go through, certain amount of graduates have to pass boards, etc. If the state allows the graduates of that school to sit for RN or LPN boards then what difference does it make? You'll still be an RN or LPN.
