What questions should I expect on the Epic Inpatient Assistive Staff (PCA/NA)?

The Epic Inpatient Assistive Staff exam is designed for individuals who work in a healthcare setting and will use Epic Systems, a widely used electronic health record (EHR) platform, primarily in an inpatient setting.

The exam assesses your ability to understand and navigate Epic's inpatient workflow and functionalities.

While the specific questions will vary depending on the version of Epic your organization uses and your role, the exam generally covers the following core areas:

  • Basic navigation. Expect questions about how to navigate through Epic's interface and different workflows. You may need to demonstrate how to open patient charts, access patient data, and use different tabs and modules (e.g., Patient Summary, Medication Orders, etc.).
  • User Interface (UI): Questions may test your familiarity with Epic's user interface, including how to search for patient records, use drop-down menus, and navigate between screens.
  • Patient demographics. You may be asked about how to access or update patient demographic information.
  • Patient orders. Be familiar with reviewing patient orders, such as lab tests and nursing orders.
  • Documenting care. You could be tested on completing tasks and documenting vital signs within Epic.
  • Warnings and alerts. They may ask questions about allergy alerts.
  • HIPAA Compliance. Expect questions about patient confidentiality and privacy regulations.
  • User access and permissions. You may be tested on the importance of not sharing passwords, privacy screens, and logging off.

Review Epic Training Materials

If your organization provides specific training or a study guide, use that as your primary resource. Some organizations also offer hands-on practice sessions or test environments for Epic. It doesn't hurt to ask.

If allowed, familiarize yourself with navigating the Epic interface, entering data, and managing patient care tasks in a mock or real test environment..

You can also try a Google search for EPIC EHR courses and look on YouTube.

Good luck!
