I am not sure if it is the same everywhere..but...I can tell you the way it is here where I am...

A nurse tech is a nursing student who has finished and passed their first semester of nursing. We are basically CNA's, we do all the same stuff they do only we get paid more. Also, there are nurses who will take you and teach you and let you do different skills when you are a tech. Now in our ER the nurse techs do all kinds of things from EKGs to drawing blood, inserting F/C, d/cing IVs etc. I have found it to be a wonderful experience while I am in school and in fact...I am done with my 5th and final semester in August and I have to say...I have done more foleys, IVs and Fingersticks at work than I have done in my 5 semesters in school. I love my job. I watch, listen and learn from all the nurses I work with. I watch every procedure being done when I get the chance. I figure you can never watch too many IVs being put in...and everyone has their own technique of doing things...I figure I will pick up a tip from each of them and develope my own style. I am starting my preceptorship tonight in the ER...can't wait. Hope this helped you out some.
