What made you decide to go into BICU?

Published

Did you have some sort of experience with burn pts that made you enter the BICU field? Or did you know you want BICU from the very start?

I would really love to work as a Burn ICU but I haven't been exposed to too many burn pts.

So let me ask you this: What made you enter the BICU field?

I'm a new ASN grad in Florida who just started my first position as a BICU nurse. I had no experience with burns, I chose the BICU wanting to see a non-traditional aspect of nursing. Traditional med/surg wasn't exciting enough for me during school, and I like the idea of focused care instead of generalized. Plus ICU's are well stocked, the physicians and nurses work very closely and support each other (especially in my unit), you really get to know your patients, and the documentation is easier with 1-2 patients versus 5-6 patients. Burns are a branch of medicine that tends to scare people, but you quickly get used to it like anything else.... after a few dressing changes and hydrotherapy sessions, you adjust. Good luck!

I agree.... I did Burns in Detroit for the last 10 yrs.... I'm a true Burn ICU nurse!!! There will be days that it get's to you but as long as you have good support team you couldn't ask for a better job... Good luck in your career- Sara

I have pretty much worked everywhere in the in the hospital ,other than BICU. I just want to take this opportunity to let nurse's in this field know I think it is the most difficult field. You have my utmost respect. Burn nurse's are to me incredible kind of people. Thank you for the job you do
