What do you love about working in oncology?

Specialties Oncology

Hey everyone, I am a new grad in the interveiw process with several area hospitals. I was just offered a position on an oncology floor. The nurse manager and staff all seemed wonderful and the unit was very nice. My only concern is that I have never been on an oncology floor. I don't know what to expect... So for all you oncology nurses out there who love your job, would you mind giving me some input on why you love it in oncology? I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks

Lindsay

I didn't "choose" oncology, so to speak, but it happened to be the unit for which I interviewed following school where I clicked with the manager and so started the job right after school.

The advantage of working oncology especially as a new grad is that you'll learn most everything you would have learned on a medical floor plus all the onc-related stuff. Cancer patients tend to have multi-system problems and can be complicated so you will definitely use your critical thinking. You will also get experience in accessing and managing central lines and multiple iv-infusions.

Good luck,

Julie, I'm glad to hear you say I'll develop all my skills b/c I too just accepted a new grad position as an Onc RN. And this is against all odds. I wasn't expected to pass my boards on the 1st try as I was coming off a very difficult final semester. But I did. And since I have very little skills to speak of, everyone (family, friends...) have been pushign me towards medsurg and CV/ICU. But the thought of cardio terrifies me.

Thank you for stating quite frankly that I will get and improve my skills. I've been struggling w/ accepting this role. I already know that teh pace and the idea of compassionate empathetic nursing is what appeals to me, much more so than the excitement of seeing the traumatic stuff.

Specializes in oncology.

I see people at their very best & I see people at their very worst. I am constantly amazed at the strength of the human spirit and the outcome it plays on a persons health. My patients and their famlies teach me so much. It is not a easy job by any means but, I love it and cannot imagine doing anything else.
