What do you look for?

Hi all, I'm a senior student, due to graduate in July, finishing school in June. I am precepting in the NICU but I am a nights/weekends student so our clinicals are only every other weekend and occasionally they do other things like last clinical weekend I had home health so I was away from the NICU for a month!

What do you look for in a student/preceptor? What do you appreciate?

I've been trying to be assertive and helpful but want to make sure I'm not annoying also!

For example today I was back after not being there for a month, I came in at 6:30, had my scrubs on ahead of time (we get scrubs there to wear), then scrubbed in and waited for the charge nurse to come on. There was some chaos but that got straightened out and then I went to the charge nurse and introduced myself again, told her that I am a senior student and am precepting there and need an RN to work with. She assigned me to the RN and on we went for report. Got report and once done I told the RN what I can do, what I have done already in the NICU and what I hadn't done that way she would know exactly where we stood. I"m willing to do anything as long as I'm taught how! So that was great. I had a great experience today, did mostly feeds but did a few assessments too.

Just wondering if I'm on the right path. It stinks b/c every other weekend I have the same routine again b/c the same nurses are not usually there so I have a new preceptor and have to explain who I am, what I can do, etc. etc.

Thanks!
