Hello there,
I am a nurse-to-be, and one of the areas I am interested in is Psychiatric Nursing. I would love it if you gave me a snippet of your life, if you have children, if your job allows you enough time for your family, what the hours are like, the level of stress, the pay, and your overall satisfaction with this area of nursing.
I am trying to get a good impression of all the fields of nursing I am intrigued by so that I can play with ideas before I go to school.
Thank you,
Stephanie

Hi there. I use to work at Children's Hospital in Boston for 4 years on their child/adolescent psychiatric unit. If I was going to recommend any place to wory psych in boston it would be there. The staff is great. We worked 5 8hr shifts, or did a 16 hour shift in there. You will have time for your family, you just need to make sure you take care of YOU first! If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask!

Stephanie, Like any profession, you must take care of yourself first. I have been a Psychiatric RN for over sixteen years. It would depend where you work, inpatient, partial hospitalization program, a continueing day program or an outpatient setting. I have worked in all those areas.. each has it's stressors and each has it's rewards....
You make time for family, fun and a life outside of work, no matter what type of job/profession.....
Psychiatric nursing has been very challenging but also rewarding in many ways. I would highly recommend the field to those who feel they would like to care for a population of people who are often misunderstood, discriminated against and who need support and care! Good luck! Pronurse
