What do you know about Akron School of Practical Nursing?

Published

This is a 41 week LPN program through the Akron Public Schools. I visited the school and although it seems "dated" (their lab more specifically), their clinicals are held mostly in the surrounding acute care facilities as opposed to just LTC or Dr.'s offices as some of the other programs are only offering.

Tuition is about $12,000, which is in line with most programs. It has a class starting at the end of February, so I would be close to finishing up when other programs are just getting started in late August/September.

This school is fairly close to where I live (only about a 1/2 hour away). I looked into some of the LPN programs in the Cleveland area, but with travel time and traffic, it would take just over an hour each way. This is time I could be spending studying as well as other family obligations. I am 40, married and have 2 children who are 15 and 10, so having some time at home for dinner, homework, etc. is still very important. I would not be working while I am going to school.

My plan is to become an LPN, work (which I know realistically will be in LTC) and continue on to an RN. I will probably do an online bridge for my BSN.

Does anybody have any information about the school that they would like to share, good or bad? After my initial visit, I was a bit disappointed as it didn't seem to be very technically advanced. The lab consisted of beds and "patients", but I didn't see any of the equipment like you would see in an actual patient's room. Maybe you learn about all the equipment in clinicals as opposed to the lab?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I would consider the clinical sites more than the lab-- definitely more important. It sounds like a good program.
