What kinds of questions are asked during nursing school interviews?

Published

hi everyone,

i have an interview with the ut son in houston on september 15th and have been preparing for it but i would like to know if you guys have any input or experiences you'd like to share!

also, i would like your guys' opinion on some of the answers i have so far. i've managed to find sample interview questions and took the time to write out answers to them on word.

so far, this is what i have...

for example,

you are the nursing student on a clinical unit and the patient (on the 4th floor of the hospital) asks you "would i die if i jump from this window?" what would you do? or, you are the nurse and you are reporting an important change in patient condition to a doctor and the doctor yells at you and calls you stupid, what would you do?

-offset the remark by responding to the doctor in a calm and rationale way. as for the patient, it depends on his tone of voice. i would ask him why does he ask such a thing. also, i would make sure to check the status of this patient's emotional/psychological state, in accordance with maslow's hierarchy of needs, as he might be having suicidal thoughts which might be the result of a side effect of a drug.

what do you think a nurse's responsibility is in today's society?

- a nurse's responsibility in today's society is to provide service to its citizens. it involves caring for patients not just from a clinical perspective, but in a holistic way as well - physically, emotionally, and psychologically. it involves being an advocate and providing support to the patient's family. it also a nurse's responsibility to be an active member of society by providing health awareness to its citizens through organizations such as the office of the national nurse, etc..

* what qualities do you possess that will make you a good nurse?

- i am patient, understanding, compassionate towards others, and i do not judge people on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, etc. i am accepting towards all people and believe each patient should receive the highest level of care possible. also, i am very geared towards the health sciences - and would thoroughly enjoy the problem-solving, critical thinking aspect of nursing in regards to human bodily functions, things that may go wrong, and how to fix them.

so guys, what do you think???? are my answers long enough, thorough enough, do they flow/make sense?

"also, i would make sure to check the status of this patient’s emotional/psychological state, in accordance with maslow’s hierarchy of needs, as he might be having suicidal thoughts which might be the result of a side effect of a drug."

you've established a correlation between 2 variables which shouldn't exist (implied causality). i'd rephrase that. it's clunky.

"i am patient, understanding, compassionate towards others, and i do not judge people on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, etc. i am accepting towards all people" rephrase this- you're saying the same thing twice.

"believe each patient should receive the highest level of care possible" is belief a quality?

"i am very geared towards the health sciences"- this is what the question is asking: how are you geared? there's your answer

hope this helps :)

Some things they asked me at my interview (that I can remember):

Can you think of a time when you believe your integrity was being tested?

What are your best 3 qualities that you think will be a positive attribute in regards to becoming a nurse?

Why do you want to be a nurse?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

There were more, but this is all i remember right now.. hope it helps!
