What to keep in mind for NICU interview

(remember that I'm still a student... so this is just a guess of what I would do)

research common neonate drugs

differences between gestational ages... the basics

differences between different NICU levels (II, III, IV)

I think every interviewer knows that you probably know only 5% of what you will eventually be taught... but they just need to be assured that:

1) You can learn what they teach.

2) You are professionally interested in neonatal care.

3) You got a calm head about ya.

I know they always ask if you have any questions... I use this time to ask questions that I'm both curious about, but also makes me look like i've done my research...

For example:

1) Does your hospital utilize NNPs, how about CNS educators?

2) What level NICU are you, where is the local facility that more acute cases are transfered to?

3) What are your visitor policies? How do you think this affects infectional control?

4) Do you use "bays" or individual rooms?

Anyhoot, just a thought.

PS: I just started spring break after finishing a notorously nasty Maternity pharm test... so i'm living my nursing life vicariously through you.

Make sure to ask about the orientation program for new NICU nurses. Ask about typical patient ratios. Find out what shifts they're hiring for, and what kind of schedues they have (3 12's, grid schedule, self scheduling, weekend program).

One thing to be careful about - don't talk too much about how you love babies and children so much. This is an ICU we're talking about, and loving kids and taking care of them when they're critically ill doesn't always mix. I'm sure you're aware of this, but I've seen too many new grads come into the NICU purely out of their love for babies, only to leave a few months later because they couldn't handle the heartbreak that comes with the NICU.

If you are going into the NICU because of specific reasons - personal NICU experience, interest in the ever-changing world of NICU technology and research, etc. then tell the manager about it. It's a great field, and if it's a good fit for you, you'll be so happy once you're part of the team! NICU nurses are amongst the happiest nurses I know. Good luck!

I am applying for a job in the NICU and want to have the best interview possible! What topics should I be sure to research and what do I need to keep in mind for an interview that might give me an edge....
Any thoughts?

I interviewed in a NICU for both an externship and later a job. After both the interviews, I was told that they were glad I hadn't said I wanted to work in NICU because I liked babies. That's just something to keep in mind!
