What I Wish I Knew

Published

I am a nursing student who is just over a month away from graduation. As I get ready to go into the work force I would like to know something from some experienced nurses. What is the ONE thing that you wish they would have taught you in nursing school to help you in your careers?

I didn't have an advanced physiology class until I was working on my BSN. I think every nursing program should have such a class as it really helps put all the A & P stuff together and applies to what is seen in patients. I also did not have a physical assessment class until my BSN, so I would highly recommend this for any nursing student. I have had students come up to me and ask where the pedal pulses are etc, they had not had a physical assessment class yet but were on the floor performing assessments. I kind of envy the nursing students of today who learn with the simulator, for me, I had to wait until an actual patient came into the hospital with the symptoms to really see what to look for. Practice interviewing people as you will be doing this a lot with assessments when you work in the field.
