What should I do?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I know I want to have a career where I would be working with children> After doing some research I thought to become a pediatric register nurse is the best fit for me. However, I'm not sure how to go about it. Current I'm going to be taking the nursing program at a county school and transfer to a university to get my 4-year degree but after that, I'm lost.

You'll gain a lot more knowledge as you go through school about these things, but generally pediatric nursing jobs are harder to come by (more in demand) right out of graduation. However I've talked to quite a few who got their dream nursing job in a specialty we are told is hard to get right away so you could get pretty lucky, especially if you play your cards right. (IE Put yourself out there early on. Build good relationships with your school. Get a job as an aid/pct and show you are reliable and a good worker)

So basically after you finish your schooling (if you graduate from the county college, you can work as an RN before you earn your BSN) then you can apply to almost any RN job (you will also need to pass your NCLEX - a nursing state board exam - and each employer will have a time requirement for this after you are hired, if you did not take/pass first).

You can get certified as a pediatric nurse, which requires a number of hours working as a peds RN and passing an exam. You may also choose to go to graduate school and major in Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. HTH.
