What do I do with a PDA and why would I want one for school? LOL!

Hi,

I'm not the most up to date person when it comes to technology.

So, I keep seeing all of these posts referring to PDA's.

What exactly does a PDA do and why is it helpful to have one

while in school? Also, is there any recommended ones that are not gonna

break the bank- something reasonably priced that does the job well?

Yeah ... the only problem with phones is that you can't use them in a hospital.

You can in mine! Staff use their cell phones on their breaks for personal calls, and I must say I get excellent reception on my palm treo smartphone with cingular. As does one of the anesthesiologists!

(My hospital doesn't restrict use of cell phones- they don't interfer with any of our equipment)

In school, I found my cheepie PDA useful for Epocratres, EKG strips, drip rates, etc. AS a nurse, I find my newer smartphone handy for working on Word files (? maybe my resume?) on the go, I can then hot sycn them back to mmy computer, playing solitaire when a high risk labor patient is sleeping and I can't leave the room, opnce my documentation is caught up, it keeps me awake.

Which obvuiosly typing this repsonse isn't. Wow, must e btime for sleep!

Well, that's good. But in my area, I have yet to find a hospital that allows cell phones. All of them have the restriction. You have to go outside to use it. That doesn't do me much good in clinical or while I'm working.

A lot of great answers but for those of us that are clueless about pda software................you all mention tabers drug guide etc....how much do these softwares cost? and do you just buy them at Best Buy like any other software? :uhoh21: thanks!

Yes, thanks for all of the replies but HOW do all of these great things get into the PDA? I'm really technology clueless I guess.

It sounds great, but how do these books get onto the PDA? How do all of these calculations, EKG strip info, ect....get into the little thing? LOL?

And where would I look for all of this stuff to load into the PDA?

Most of the software can be purchased as a download. You download it onto your computer, then you hook your PDA up to the computer (this can be done through a USB port or wirelessly) and install the software. It might seem a little overwhelming, but it's really easy! :)

You can buy memory cards that come in lots of sizes, and most PDA software is specifically written so it doesn't take up ridiculous amounts of room. Like someone else said, a 1G memory card will probably hold anything you could ever need (they run in the $100 range, depending on the brand and the type of media your PDA takes.)

My hubby is a total technology geek!
