What have I gotten myself into ugh?!?!

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi everyone,

To make a long story short, I worked my butt off in school, studied really hard and passed Nclex and now Im starting to think, why? I finally got my first RN job (by the way where the hell is the nursing shortage lol) and the only thing they had available was 7p to 7a. Everyone kept telling me to "start somewhere".

But every since I started working, Im miserable. I hate being the "new person". `There are a few things that bother me about the job (trust me I understand finding a job is hard and no place is 100% excellent but Im just venting) When I introduced myself to my preceptor she was not so thrilled about having me. She kind of smiled a little (she struggled with it) and looked at her other coworkers. You can pretty much feel when someone is talking about you with their eyes (you know what I mean). She does things extra fast and i hate asking a ton of questions but I would rather get on her nerves than to harm a patient.

Another thing is they had me sign and do all of this EXTRA crap during orientation but they have yet to teach me the proper procedure on what to do is my patient gets REALLy REALLY ill. Ive asked numerous times and they just shrug it off. WTH? I would think thats a valid concern.

One more thing, after Ive been there all damn night, I wanna go home. The morning crew comes straggling in around 710 maybe 715. This bugs the hell out of me. Ugh.

Just venting guys. This is really bugging me because I never complain. Help guys. Any pointers on what I should do

Awwww I'm sorry your having such a bad time :/ I guess you should take a moment and remember why you picked this career and who in the end do you want to satisfy and help out... Another thing is that no matter where you work, you will always crash with people like "your preceptor" so just keep focus on your goal of helping out patients and forget about the rest! At least you got a job(:

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

Well, first things first. You will only be the new person until the next new person comes along or you quit and start over elsewhere. So just kInda get over that one.The nurses are not teaching you yet about what to do if your patient gets really really I'll because that is a bridge you cross when you get to it. It is more important you know how to recognize a change in status and who to contact for help. You are in new grad hell. Everyone goes through it. Just keep plugging away. Eventually another new grad will start and then you will see how far you have come.

Thanks for your replies!! I think I was more nervous and scared than anything. I think once I learn the ropes it wont be so bad (hopefully). I really do love nursing!!
