What are you grappling with?

Published

It's nearing the end of the semester of my Chem class and suddenly I find myself struggling to master redox reactions with oxygen. I'm having a hardish time wrapping my head around this. I know I'll get it in a week but grappling with this stuff is ANNOYING. But that's how we learn right?

Feel free to comment with what you're grappling with.

I'm trying to learn the substrate, reaction, medium, reagents and results for biochemical testing in Microbio. It's a lot of information to assimilate by Thursday (because I procrastinated, of course).

Have you looked at Khan academy for help? Redox reactions and electrochemistry | Chemistry | Science |

Thanks for the link thatjengirl! Anything mathematical I learn best by doing a bunch of problems till it becomes automatic.

How now will you go about getting all your stuff for bio down? Flash cards? Writing on the walls? Lol that last one I've done to memorize the polyatomic ions

Are you studying for your practical? I just had mine last Thursday!

I make flashcards on Quizlet usually. Oddly enough I don't actually use the flashcards - making them is what helps me learn.

Nope, just a quiz. We only have two practicals and the next one is later this month. How'd you do?

I have an A&P II Lab exam later today, over the digestive system. Wish me luck!

Nice! We have 3 practicals but she said the second one (the one we just took) was by far the hardest out of the 3. I did well! Got a 95% and it was the only A in the whole class (48 students). :)

Ah good luck!! I know you're going to rock it! I have my muscle lab practical for A&P I in just under 2 hours. I'm kinda slightly freaking out. haha

Oh, I hate chemistry, lol. It's my hardest subject this semester. I had to drop it, and the professor don't like it. BUT she kept giving me F's on my tests, knowing I was trying my best. So, I don't blame myself. I'm going to retake it in the fall, when I have time to focus more on it.

... I just have no idea why she wants to fail students, and I'm not sure why I was failing. People pay out money for these classes. Some professors need to have consideration. I've made A's and B's in everything else. Strange how all of a sudden, I started failing chemistry. In my case, it's the professors fault for making it more difficult than it already is, so I don't blame myself.

Sometimes, it's the professors that make it hard on students, just to be doing it. I wouldn't be too hard on myself, lol. You'll wrap your mind around it and succeed. You just have to keep studying to no avail. If you have a very, very difficult time with something, get a tutor or talk to your professor. You better do it before you get in too deep. . .

. . . because some professors will fail you, and they don't care to do it, as awful as it is. With me, I'm happy I made the choice to drop the chemistry for the time being. I have 5 subjects this semester, well, now 4. I'm not telling you to drop it, but if it's too much weight, then find ways real quick to wrap your mind around whatever it is, that you're having difficulty with.

Lol, the best part is, the grades I was getting in this chemistry class are now gone! They will not hurt my GPA. In my case, I believe it was the professor.

Hang in there! You'll succeed.

aww thank you so much for your encouragement! My grade is pretty high right now so I have plenty of cushion to get the grade I want in the end. Best of luck to you that you finish the semester strong!

Conversions were my favorite part of chemistry. :) I could do those all day long. Redox reactions... Not so much.

My Achilles heel had to have been statistics. It took me three times to finally get it down pat. The first time I attempted it, I tried it online and quickly found out that was a mistake. Luckily it was early enough in the quarter that it didn't pop up on my transcript when I dropped it. Second time I had the world's worst math teacher. The class average was a C-... This guy had a reputation throughout the state for being bad, but at the time he was the only one teaching stats at my school. It was a daily class and when I was hospitalized for a few days and came back, I couldn't catch up for the life of me. I had to withdraw. The third time I was with the loveliest woman who made it so fun and simple. Passed statistics with an A. :)
