What to expect in Med/Surg I ???

Published

Hey guys and girls, I just finished fundamentals and I am starting Med/Surg I and Pharmacology in 2-3 months and I wanted to know what can I expect in Med/surg (besides a lot of studying)??? Should I start reading during the summer, how can I get ready for it in this next 2-3 months??? Any recommendations???? Thanks!

Lots and lots of studying. You're going to have to read and re-read and understand the mechanics of the diseases and pathophysiology of all the different problems people can have.

I wouldn't really read ahead. I'd invest in a good tape recorder you can bring to class so you can listen without having to work so hard to take notes -- then listen to the tapes later at home while studying. You could start memorizing lab values -- that would help and you'll use that forever.

Do you mean clinical or it is an academic class?

Ours was pathophysiology and I really loved it. I was lucky to have a great professor who really made it all come alive.

It's all about seeing how everything is medically treated and how your nursing interventions connect to the patho of it all. For example -- our pt. last night suffering from a pulmonary embolism had a hard time breathing ...we as the nurses had to keep her sitting up, make sure her oxygen was on, and provide pain relief, monitor for any worsening of the condition, etc. I mean -- you have to understand what is going on physically so you can tailor your nursing interventions to the situation.

That's what it's all about basically.

1. Relax and enjoy you summer. Every student needs/deserves a nice break.

2. Get your books early.

3. Read the first chapter.

4. Come to class ready to learn the meat and potatoes of our jobs. This is the fun stuff, procedures, the fixing to the problems, the core of care.

5. Enjoy! Study! Have fun!

Best of luck,
