What do the envelopes mean?

OK. Will someone tell me what the orange, yellow, open, closed, black dotted envelopes mean on the left hand side of the screen.

Also, the next column with the pices of paper, faces, etc. Do these have any specific meaning. Sorry, I'm new to computers.

If you click on the General Nursing Discussion link & go to the bottom of that page, you should see an explanation of all of the little icons. All will be revealed to you at that time!

What does the envelope with the black dot on it mean? I went to the page that Joy mentioned and saw the explanations for the envelope icons, except the dotted one was left out.
