I am going to be graduating from Nursing school in May 2009. While I am in school I have had many oppurtunities to attend different areas of the hospital. For instance I have been to the Emergency Department, Cath Lab, Pediatrics, the medical floor, OR, ICU and soon I will be going to Labor and Delivery. Well my question I am sending out, is "I have decided that my goal is to work in the emergency department. So how should I get started with my career? Do I start on a medical floor and gain some experience or should I work at a smaller hospital and try to diversify my self among the different oppurtunities. I am going to start applying for a job in the next few months. Here in our area we have several hospitals that are available for me to work within. The bigger of the hospitals would require a nurse to pick a floor to work on. For example to work on 2N or 3N, peds, labor/delivery and such. Any help or prevoius experience from someone would be greatly appreciated..

If you want to work in the ED, then that is where I would start. Apply early, like now.
