What area of nursing would work for me? Please help, all suggestions appreciated!

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hello, I have been an ICUSD nurse for a few years now and don't plan on changing paths anytime soon, but I have some health issues that I know will eventually make floor nursing too difficult for me. While I will not be outright disabled, I will not be able to keep up with the fast pace and physical demands of floor nursing.

Being a relatively new nurse I was looking for advice about what might be a good area/specialty of nursing to be looking into when the time comes to transition out of my current role. I have RA with neuropathy issues that make starting an IV very difficult for me. I would prefer to work long hours in exchange for less days. Being on my feet is fine b/c once I get moving I am good to go, but lifting (limited grip strength) is a problem. So, what would be an area of nursing (if it exists) that offers 12 hr shifts, limited to no IV starts, and minimal lifting? Thank you all so much for any suggestions, this weighs heavy on my mind and I want to have a plan for the future.

OR nursing, school nursing or an office setting may be good options. Best of luck to you :)

Clinical setting or teaching/training areas will likely to suit in your case....
