What is your ages for Peds

Hello all - I have a question - What is your age range for the Peds in your hospital. Ours is 4 weeks to 18 years old. Re working policy and wanted to see what you folks have - Thanks - Gary

We accept patients from birth to their 17th birthday. Occasionally exceptions have been made for adolescents who have been hospitalized for a prolonged period who were in hosptial for their 17th birthday and have not been home, who crump and require ICU, but not very often does this happen.

Depends on the unit, the NICU doesn't take pt's that have been discharged home and then come back. in the ICU we take 6wks old and up, same on the peds floor. Any patient in the ICU under the age of 16 has to have a peds intensivist consult on the case which ticks off our trauma surgeons but they will have to get over it.....

KC, why do the trauma surgeons have this problem with a Peds Intensivist? This takes some pressure off of them?

I think it's just a control thing with surgeons. I once worked in a NICU where the surgeons had to have a neonatology consult on their patients. It was necessary to protect the little ones from fluid overload, feeding problems, etc., as most of the surgeons were clueless about these issues in infants. They resisted it though.

It is exactly a control and ego thing. It is only some of our trauma surgeons. The others would much rather let the peds guys run the program. Like the above, it is not only about fluid, but also about vent management. It can get ugly and unfortunately sometimes the nurses and pt care get in the way. I wish the doc's could learn to play nice together.
