WGU transfer

Updated:   Published

Hello!

just wanted to get some feedback from people about Western Governors University RN-BSN program. I have done the application and am just waiting for my transcripts to be evaluated. Everything has been fine so far, however a friend of mine said that she knows people that went there and when they tried to go to other masters, Ph.D., etc programs later on, the WGU credits did not transfer anywhere. Has anyone else experienced this? I really like their RN-BSN program but don't want to waste my time if I want to go for a new degree later on and nothing transfers.

Thanks in advance!

Well, that's a new one to add to the list of questionable WGU criticisms. It doesn't really make sense, since you don't transfer credits from a BSN to a Master's or Doctoral program, regardless of what BSN program you go to.

It's possible that some course or another was a prerequisite for some class in some particular Master's/Doctoral program. I've seen this with Statistics. And it's possible that the program in question didn't accept WGU's version of that class as fulfilling the prerequisite.

Or it's possible that this person is actually talking about the MSN program, and attempting to transfer credits from that to a Post-master's certificate or DNP program, and not having them accepted. I suppose that's plausible.

It's possible that she means that the GPA coming out of WGU is less likely to be competitive for these programs. This has been discussed in great detail in many other threads.

In any case, people with WGU BSNs get into grad programs, including nurse practitioner programs, regularly. https://allnurses.com/western-governors-university/graduate-doctoral-admissions-996947.html has examples, and I believe there are other older threads as well. It's possible that it would be a problem for some program or another, but it certainly isn't universal.

I completed WGU's RN-to-BSN program in March 2015 and was accepted into the MSN program at Eastern New Mexico University a few months later.

There's plenty of us WGU BSN graduates on this forum who have been accepted into masters and doctoral degree programs. Our credits transferred without issues due to regional and CCNE accreditation.

Thanks so much! That eases my mind lol
