WGU PreLicensure Questions(CA)

Published

Hey guys! I have a few questions about WGU pre licensure nursing program.

Skip to the bottom for general like/dislike questions!

So....I applied and have everything submitted. My transcripts have just been evaluated and I received the results. All of the prereqs have transferred in except for biochemistry(3CUs) and pharmacology(2CUs) which they told me I should take with them anyway. The transcript evaluation states that there are 58 CUs in the program and I have completed 39(67.24%) with 19 CUs remaining. [Not sure if I can state the classes so I won't for now].

I'm assuming the 19 remaining CUs are solely the 6month prelicensure portion, correct? The typical workload is 12 CUs/term, is it too ambitious of me to want to complete the 19 CUs in 1 term if this is my first term with WGU? I'm coming straight from a JC so I'm used to being in traditional school although I have taken maybe 5 or 6 online classes and have done pretty well. How would that work if they usually only give 12CUs a term but I have 19 to complete for the prelicensure portion. I would have to complete the remaining 7 prior to continuing with the actual nursing portion of the program and applying to clinicals.

I'm hoping to be admitted for the May 1 start date for either Huntington Memorial or Cedars cohort because I live on the border of OC/LA. I've also expressed interest in Utah since I have family there I could live with so I'm hoping that doubles my chances since it seems so competitive. I'm an EMT-B, CPT-1, science GPA 3.0 and TEAS of 85.3% but my admissions counselor said I was very competitive due to my healthcare background but after reading some of the other posts on here I'm worried that I'm not terribly competitive at all.

If anyone lives in my area, maybe we could become study or carpool buddies!

Finally...

If anyone has gone through the pre licensure program, how did you like it? Did you feel like you were properly prepared for clinicals and, more importantly, the NCLEX? Did you feel like the self study and the program they line up works especially for a program as rigorous as nursing? Are there any books I can buy now that will give me a little bit of insight and a head start with some of the content? Are there any NCLEX prep books or programs you swear by?

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate any feedback and advice you have! Sorry for such a long post!

Hi EmmRee! I am applying for the same cohort, although I'm up in the Ontario area. I don't even know what hospitals are available for clinicals; my entrance counselor was vague on those details. I really like your description...I'm ready to kick ass too. I'm have about the same courses to take in my first semester, with the addition of dosage calc. I started am ADN program, so I was able transfer in pharm. Good luck on your application! Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk off the boards.

Take care!

The program is setup for your success. Don't worry too much about getting ahead now. Just take it one class at a time while ensuring you are using good time management.
