WGU Prelicensure Program (San Diego)

Published

Hi everyone. We will be relocating back to North County SD in the next year. I am looking at nursing school options and don't see many. I would be a second degree applicant and most interested in ABSN programs. WGU's online coursework and established clinical locations are attractive to me. (I was recently accepted into UWOSH online ABSN program but they couldn't secure clinical locations for me.) It looks like the Orange County hospitals would be about an hour drive from me.

Can anyone tell me about this program? Anyone living outside Orange Completing it? How often do you drive in for on-campus requirements and how often are clinicals each week?

Lastly, graduates, is this school reputable in the state--when you apply for jobs, and if you apply into an MSN program.

Thanks!

I wish someone would reply. I am in your exact same situation. I also live in San Diego. My husband is military and I am stuck here for another two years. National University is my only option, but I have not heard good feedback from hospitals in regards to their program. I actually looked into UWOSH as well, but I dropped the idea because I thought I had to travel to Wisconsin. WGU seems to be my only option because in the event that we move while I am still in the program, I can commute back for the clinical since they are in condensed blocks. Hopefully we can get some feedback. I know the program is competitive, but if you got into UWOSH, then it sounds like you are a pretty good student!

Hi navywife16,

Since this last post I have started the WGU program (I was accepted into the Sept 2016 cohort) and just finished the first 6 month preclinical term. I will be starting clinicals at Fountain Valley hospital in May. I like the program so far. It's flexible but you have a lot of extra support if needed.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions. I'm more than willing to help! Best of luck.

Thank you for getting back to me! While I liked UWOSH, WGU seems to be a better fit and far less expensive. Thanks for your feedback. I know the program is competitive, can I ask your TEAS score? tHANKS! tIFFANY

Yes it is quite competitive in CA--a few in my cohort have been trying for a few application cycles, up to a year. Many are very qualified experience-wise: LPNs, RTs, CNA's, XRay Techs, Medics etc. While others are doing a total career change. Academically, also competitive as each cohort is only about 13 people. I can't speak for others but for myself I applied with a 3.8 pre-req GPA, and an 85 on the TEAS (I didn't finish the math section which pulled my overall down)--an 85 put me in the 95th% nationally and my science section (which I think they pay the most attention to) was in the 99th%. The TEAS isn't hard and I can make a bunch of recommendations for resources when you are preparing (if you want.) :)

Yes, FAR less expensive! Again, feel free to PM me if you want to keep in touch during your application process to WGU (if you decide to)-would love to help, if I can.

Best of luck Tiffany.
