West LA Veteran's hospital

Published

Afternoon everyone!

I was just speaking with a VA recruiter and he mentioned that West LA VA was looking for veteran new grads and I was wondering if anyone here works at that location. I'd really appreciate some information on what it's like working there (specifically med-surg since that's where I think the open positions are) and any advice on what to expect for the interview (should they offer one).

Anything would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello, Breyson,

I'm also a veteran who will be graduating with my ADN in May. I am rated 60% disabled. Wondering how you were put in contact with the VA recruiter? Were there specific requirements (beyond the graduating from a nursing accredited school and a school accredited by a state nursing board) or attributes that might make candidates more competitive for employment, especially for new grads? I was considering going on and getting my BSN while working too. Not sure there. I'm 41, have a 4 yo and a 17 yo. I've been going to school for almost 8 years (with a two year break for baby) and I am honestly tired of it. Also, prior to the baby's arrival, I had a 3.75 GPA but after starting the nursing program, my grades have really declined.

I think my overall nursing GPA is 2.5 But my overall GPA is still in the 3.0s bc I had so many hours when I started the program.

Anyway, any tips would be greatly appreciated to assist w/my getting hired by the VA. The reason I chose this ADN program was bc I wanted my 10 year Navy time to count towards retirement.

Thank you

Leanna

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well the recruiters actually called me but that was only after I applied through USAjobs.gov. So my advice would be to start there if you are going to apply. Each job has the requirements and recommendations listed.

Hope that helps!

I had an interview for ER/ICU. You want to live somewhat close. I was looking at over an hour drive ech way and it just wouldn't have been feasible. They are a federal department so not bound by California ratio laws however it sounds like there is more ancillary staff. It looked like a place you would learn a lot, but be prepared to work very hard. Good luck to you. :)

Thanks for the information; yeah I figured they weren't bound by Ca ratio laws but I wish that I knew someone who has experience working there. It's strange that I can find nursing reviews for other hospitals but not for the VA.
