Weird, bad things in OB

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Does it seem to anyone else that there are many weird, bad things happening lately or is it just Central Arkansas?

I know personally of 4 maternal deaths in the last month in this area, different hospitals. In the last 6 months, many babies who shouln't have died: 2 on the perineum, 1 36-weeker, etc.

Any thoughts??? :o

OMG that is scary. So far, none of my experiences in 5 years approach this horrid string of bad events you describe here. I am truly sorry to hear this. How are you handling it all?

This week I had a baby born that was a female, but there was a small stub that looked like the head of a penis where the clitoris normally is. She obviously had a vagina and everything else looked normal. The pedi is going to have her be seen by a perinatologist for further testing. It just looked so different from what we usually see.

BluEyes:

Just handling it by talking it out with other nurses. Our social workers came to hold a debriefing meeting which will continue for some weeks. I have tried to find sites on the web for nurses destressing; not much there. Thanks for your concern.

Not so terrible as you have sadly had to go through, but we have had several undiagnosed fetal anamolies, evident only at birth. THAT is unusual....

OMG! I thought it was just us, but we have been having a really bad year. We very nearly lost a mom (but didn't thank god, she did amazingly well) to an amniotic fluid embolism that caused DIC, was in surgery for like 8 hours and used all the blood in the hospital; we had a mom roll over on her baby when she fell asleep nursing, our nurse found the baby blue, it was recusitated but then was later taken off the vent and died, we had another baby that was brought back into the ER at 6 weeks of age with severe injuries consistent with abuse that also died. Did I mention we only do 20 births a month?

AlaskaKat,

Is this unusual for your hospital? I get the feeling it is; I am almost afraid to go to work!! Any theories about causes? El Nino?

Global Warming? Aliens?
