WCCCD Students - Is this OK?

I've been offered a position that involves passing meds and possibly handling narcotics. Although a great opportunity to learn I'm feeling a bit uneasy since I haven't been able to speak with anyone at the nursing office since the move, and soon I'll have to give this place my decision. Are we allowed to take such positions???

Why would it be any of there buisness where you work? This a school you are paying money to attend, not a institution that controls your life. If anyone asks, tell them you work at the landing strip or mcdonalds or you assist in brain surgery.

I wouldn't be so much concerned about what WCCCD thinks as much as personal liability. I thought that you had to have a license to pass meds and as a student I wouldn't even go near narcotics. I work as an nurse extern and I have to tell the primary RN when my meds are due so she can pass them. In clinicals we work and pass meds under our instructor's license and we are insured by the school (I carry student nurse for myself on top of that, just in case because we can be sued for malpractice too.)

Be careful, whatever choice you make.

:eek:LOL. Frankly I don't think it totally concerns them either. But, I just want to remain in compliance with my school's policies. After a year now of very hard work and personal challenges because of being in nursing school, the last thing I want to do is compromise all of this. Thanks for replying.

Actually you don't have to be a fully licensed RN to pass meds or narcotics. You can be certified to do so such as in the case of Direct Care Workers that work in group homes/institutions.

As a certified DCW I passed meds for well over five years before entering nursing school. I had to handle psychotropics, narcotics (plus doing narcotic count with coworkers), etc.

Personal liability is definitely my greatest concern. I simply don't want to be doing something outside of our code of ethics. I guess I'll abide by the rule: when in doubt don't do it. Thanks for responding.:)
