That's what I was thinking, but then I know Jewish people who don't "practice" the faith, but are identified more by their name and heritage, which is what was throwing me.

Yes the twelve tribes of israel are straight out of the Bible, but the book gives plenty of candy to answer the question. But, a firm knowledge of the Bible would definitely help on that question.
