Okay, I've wondered this for a while and another thread got me started really thinkin I should just ask. I'm not trying to be gross, but when a mom gives birth in the tub, doesn't she end up with all the "extras" in the water, too, like the afterbirth and ...? How do you handle that and is it even an issue at all?
I haven't seen a waterbirth yet in the baby factory where I am doing my clinicals but on videos I have seen midwives use a small fish net type thing to remove any unwanted guests in the pool.
I don't do L&D anymore, but when I did, we used the aquarium fish nets (small ones, maybe 3"x5"?) to fish out the ickies in the birthing tub, and mom would get out of the tub to deliver the placenta.
Thanks for these responses; the great thing about this site is I can ask questions I otherwise might not! Waterbirth sounds like such a great option but the "extras" was one of my hesitancies.
