Job prospects in Seattle? BSN-RN

U.S.A. Washington

Hi! This is my first time posting on here but figured it was a good way to get some insight.

A little bit of background- I'll be graduating from Indiana University School of Nursing this December 2018. My significant other graduates in May and will be working for Amazon in Seattle. We both were there last summer for his internship and I will be going again this May-August before I return to Indiana to finish my last semester.

I'm nervous about moving to a new state as a new graduate with no experience. I would love to work at Seattle Children's as a pediatric nurse. I have worked at a daycare for almost 3 years but that's my only related experience (I'm not a tech or anything). I plan to network a lot this summer to help with the job search process. I plan to attend some Meetup groups for healthcare professionals and attend a PALS course at Seattle Children's to potentially meet new people. Anything else that could be helpful for me to do this summer please add!

Any insight regarding job prospects as a new nurse? The IU School of Nursing is a highly regarded nursing school, but so is UW so it is a little discouraging. I want to add that although my dream job is at Seattle Children's, I am open to other hospitals and nursing jobs without selling my education short. My second question, when would be the ideal time to apply? Most nursing students here already have jobs lined up before they graduate and pass their NCLEX. I would love to be able to do the same with Seattle! Any advice appreciated! Thank you!

I don't have an actual answer for you, but I am in the same boat! My SO got an Amazon offer, and will be working for them in Seattle once he graduates from his MBA program next summer. I will be graduating with my BSN at the same time as him (but my school is in NY). I plan to move to Seattle after I graduate, but my worry is that I will not find a hospital job as a new grad, especially since my whole nursing network will be in NY :(

So I totally know how you feel.

Hi! I just wanted to respond to your post because I am in a pretty similar situation right now! I don't have much info to share yet but hopefully can help you guys out down the road. I just graduated from a Case Western's nursing program in Ohio and my fiancé works at Amazon here in Seattle. I'm in the process of interviewing for some positions, hoping for NICU or Seattle Children's.

Seattle Children's has a nurse residency program and they open up applications for each cohort for about two weeks. I know they have a cohort in March but I don't think they have the info on specific application/interview dates posted on their website yet! They do have a lot of great info on the application process on their website though! So anyways, you'll know exactly when the ideal time is to apply to Seattle Children's because you will know when their application will be open!

As far as for other hospitals in the area, they kinda just post the residency applications on their career sites as they start taking applications for them! I generally applied as soon as I saw them posted, but I'm not sure if that was the correct way to go about it. I know there's some debate on whether you should apply before/after you get your RN licensure?

I definitely did not have a job lined up before I graduated, which was tough, because similar to what you said, most of my classmates already had jobs lined up in Ohio months before graduation. I think the timeline is just a little different here in Seattle than it is in other areas? Or maybe just different because I'm from out of state? Also might be different for December grads vs May grads!

Anyways, sorry I can't help you guys much yet but I'd love to share more info with you as I continue in the job process! I know firsthand how difficult it is to move to a new area right after graduation and try to find a job, so I'm glad to help!

Hi Emily! Wanted to check in and see how you were doing! Have you moved to Seattle yet?
