Dear Nurse Beth,

Is it possible to have an RN CEU business or is the competition too fierce? I am talking about putting the courses on CE broker through their platform with original content. These would be for one CEU at $10 each.

Dear Possible,

You must be an approved provider of continuing nursing education to provide continuing education for CEs. In order to be an approved provider, you'll need to meet certain criteria, such as length of material, objectives, method of evaluation, certificates, etc.

Some state BONs/BRNs approve continuing education providers. You will find an application on your state's BON or BRN website if they do approve providers. You will pay a certain amount as a provider.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) also approves providers, and is the most expensive, although ANCC approval is honored in all states.

Once approved, you will be issued a provider number to provide CEs, and you will use this number on your certificates.

An alternative, if you just are interested in creating content rather than being a provider, is to contact providers such as HealthStream and Relias, to see if they are looking for content developers.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
