Wants to challenge LVN board 17 years after graduation

I graduated from the LVN program back in 2008. Unfortunately, I had never taken the state board exam since graduating. Obviously, a lot of time has passed since and, now with a clearer mindset of what I want for myself, I want to challenge the state board and finally take the exam. But since there have been many years and many changes in the health care industry since graduating, would I have to take an lvn program all over again or are there any refresher courses I can take to catch up with the times so I can finally take the board exam? Please lead me in the best direction. I have so many regrets in my life already, the biggest one  was never taking it right out of school. Thanks for your time.

It's great that you're ready to advance your career! Be kind to yourself—recognizing and manifesting what you want is a significant step. Many nurses have unique paths back to the field, so don't dwell on past regrets.

Overseeing Agency

If you graduated in California, the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) oversees the licensure and regulation of LVNs.

If you graduated in Texas, the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) oversees the licensure and regulation of LVNs.

  • In Texas, you generally have four years from your LVN graduation to take the NCLEX-PN (Licensing Exam for Vocational Nurses).
  • In CA, you generally have three years from your LVN graduation to take the NCLEX-PN.

Beyond Time Frame

After the designated time frame, the BON requires additional steps to prove your eligibility, such as completing a refresher course or other requirements to ensure your nursing knowledge is current.

Next Step

In your case, contacting the Board directly to discuss your situation is essential.

The Board will determine your eligibility to sit for the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) exam and the courses you must complete to qualify.

Don't sign up for any courses until you have specific guidance.

Final Thought

Have you considered going for your RN? This could be an opportunity for you.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

Yes I most definitely have. I am currently back in my local CC going for my ADN. Hoping to transfer for BSN. But the reason I want to see if the State Board of Nursing  would let me take the exam is because right now I'm working in retail. And I would like to somehow get back into the field as well as help me pay for school. I really would like to take the refresher courses I need (Please if u know of any, please please let me know what I would possibly need). Should I maybe start with taking the boards for CNA for starters then? Looking forward to your input. Thanks for your time.
