I am still in pre nursing. I went into this major to ultimatly become a Family Nurse Practioner and Sub specialize in Sports Medicine. I am a Natural foods Chef/ Personal fitness trainer and I LOVE educating people on taking care of themselves and helping people to get into the best health possible. I was seen by a NP at a yearly check up and we had a great conversation about her profession and I left there and went to the community college and looing into the nursing program. I am starting from scratch but this is the profession for me. I have wanted to do xomething in the medical filed but never knew quite what. Nursing always interested me but a NP is my calling. I hope to one day have a practice or work in a clinic where I can help those who may not be able to afford a nutritionist or go to cooking classes or afford to have a fitness trainer teach them how to exercise right. Can anyone give me more insoght into this field or refer me to some good websites? Thanks

Hmm. Sounds like your interests lie more along the line of a physical therapist (I could be wrong though).
Here's a link to the Discover nursing sites which focuses on an NP
http://www.discovernursing.com/jnj-specialtyID_110-dsc-specialty_detail.aspx
And here's a link which speaks of physical therapists which has this quote
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos080.htm
"Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. They restore, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health. Their patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low-back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy"
I work as an NP in a rehabilitation hospital and therefore work closely with physical therapists and physiatrists (who are doctors of physical medicine).
I wish you well in your endeavor to become an FNP.

I can see your enthusiasm and I love it...sounds like you have some good motivation and understanding of the added value NPs bring as far as prevention, teaching, etc. You do need to realize that a lot of the stuff you want to do will not be reimbursable though via insurance? How are you going to get paid for your time?
