Want to pursue a Masters in Counseling

Published

Hello,

I graduated with a BSN in May of 2013. But as good as I am at nursing and as much as I enjoy it, it is not where my heart is. I completed nursing school because it was what my parents wanted. But now I want to pursue a career in either social work or counseling where I can work with children and adolescents. I wanted to know if it is possible for me to go directly into a MA/MS program without having to get another bachelor's degree? And any advice on how I can go about the whole process is more than welcome. I would prefer to do the majority of it online because I have a 10 month old daughter who still nurses and is showing no signs of wanting to wean and I am looking to work part time to help hubby out financially. I will also be moving to LA in August and would like to attend a program at a school nearby. Thanks in advance!

Just like nursing school, any MSW or master's in counseling program will involve a lot of "clinical," hands-on time. As for getting into a program, I suggest you speak directly to schools you are interested in. It may be a matter of completing some specific prerequisite-type courses rather completing another entire baccaluareate degree.
