Volunteering

Hey all! I have a couple questions and I also need a little advice.

I am looking to volunteer in order to qualify as a better candidate for the nursing programs in my area(near Los Angeles). I have a couple questions before I start making phone calls to different hospitals:

1. Do I need to have a specific department in mind for which I would like to volunteer?

2. I am looking to get a part time job & volunteer while I wait to hear back about my application. That being said, should I keep my schedule open and look for a part time position after I find out what hours the hospital will need me?
