Just wondering....how is the daily commute from virginia beach to norfolk??? On mapquest it says that they're about 20 min away from each other but does the traffic make that 20 min longer than it should be? Thanks

It depends on exactly where you live, where you are going, and the time of day. The 2 cities are contiguous -- they border each other. If you are trying to travel from the far corner of one to the far corner of the other at the height of rush hour traffic, it can be far longer than 20 minutes. But if you are traveling between closer locations, it can take only a few minutes.
The short answer is that people do it every day. It's a very common commute. However, I would be lying if I said that rush hour traffic didn't make a difference .... or if it was always smooth and quick.
I hate to say it ... but it depends on a lot of specific factors.

I've driven from VA Bch to Norfolk in less than 20 minutes alot of times but there have been plenty of times that its taken longer than that too. It depends on the time of day, the weather, how many accidents there are, and the never ending road construction.
Traffic is worst between 4:45 am - 8:00 am, and then again between about 4:00 and 6:30 in the evening. Like llg said, its a very, very common commute.

thanks! I actually have another question....how is the weather in that area throughout the year??? We're considering moving our there or out to the west coast. we already know we love the west coast's weather but were wondering how the weather is in NF/VB.
Medium. The summers are hot, but not as hot as the Deep South. Winter includes a few really cold days, but not as many as the North. We only get a little snow and it doesn't last ... and the summer heat tends to come in waves rather than "all day every day."
It's great if you like a change of seasons -- and to be within driving of mountains and beaches.

does it get really humid out there??? I don't mind the heat at all. It's the humidity that kills me. I'd much rather be in 110 degree dry heat weather than 70 degree humid heat weather.

How is the housing situation? Can you get a nice townhome for a decent price in VA beach?
Cost of living?
Nice single men?
i did some searching for real estate online & found that you can find a decent home in VB at around $300,000-350,000. Hopefully someone who lives there will better answer your Q
There is a wide range of price points for housing depending on the neighborhood. Also, people have very different standards about what they consider to be a "nice place to live." What one person considers a dump, another person considers to be "nice middle class housing."
The region has pricey beach front homes and downtown luxury condos. There is farmland within 45 minutes and a lot of "suburban neighborhood" areas. That's one of the things I like about the area: it offers such a variety of choices.
Are you going to find a cheap but large luxurious home on the water? No. Those types of places are expensive. Can you find a decent 3 bedroom ranch house away from the water at a reasonable price compared to the rest of the country? Yes -- but you may have to drive 20 minutes to the beach or drive 30 minutes to work, etc. It all depends on what your priorities are.
As for humidity ... yes, it can get humid at times. However, it is not every day like in the Deep South. Being on the coast, there is usually a steady breeze that helps keep the summer heat from gettting oppressive. But there are usually a few weeks here and there during the summer that get what most people would consider uncomfortably warm -- though it is not steady throughout the whole summer and most places are air conditioned. I've lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Arkansas -- and the heat here is nothing like it is in those places. I've also lived in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana -- and the winters here are nothing like they are in those places. As I said in my earlier post, the climate here is "medium" with no extremes in anything -- but that doesn't mean the weather is perfect every day.
